A New Perspective

I went on a retreat with colleagues recently, and in my reflections I discovered a new way of  approaching problems.  I had a particular situation that I had been pondering, and I had focused on “Why I can’t….”  I think that is a common way to approach challenges.  We look at something and immediately begin to think about all the reasons why it is impossible:  “I’m too old.”  “I don’t have time.”  “I don’t have the money.”  I’m sure you can come up with your own reasons why you can’t do something.

Sunday we celebrate Pentecost and the gift of the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit was speaking to me in my reflections.  Suddenly I found my thinking shifting from “Why I can’t,” to “How can I?”  I began to think of different ways of accomplishing the same goal.  I began to ponder different ways of doing this thing I had thought to be impossible.  I realized that I don’t have to do things the way they’ve always been done.  I can accomplish the same goal in different ways.  I found this insight to be very freeing.

I would like to think I will always remember to focus on how I can rather than why I can’t, however, I suspect that I will forget.  I hope that my times of forgetfulness will be brief, and my willingness to explore possibilities will predominate.  Is there a situation that has seemed impossible that you now need to approach from the perspective of “How can I?”

I invite you to join me in exploring the possibilities.  As to the situation I was pondering, I will share more about it once I finish figuring out how I can, and I am confident not only that I can, but that I will.
